How To Build Self Esteem
Have Low Self Esteem Issues?

How to build self esteem? Start at the bottom.

What bottom? Maslow’s hierarchy of needs! Abraham Maslow argued that humans have a hierarchy of needs and that we cannot be our best unless these needs are met. Each level builds into the next level, so the first level would have to be met before benefiting and helping the higher levels.

His hierarchy is portrayed as a pyramid. The needs at the bottom are seem as needs for basic survival, and build a foundation for the rest.

1 Self Actualization Needs(full potential)

2. Aesthetic needs(symmetry, order, beauty)

3. Cognitive needs(to know, explore, understand)

4. Esteem Needs(self respect, personal worth, autonomy)

5. Love and Belongingness Needs(love, friendship, comradeship)

6. Safety Needs(security; protection from harm)

7. Physiological Needs(food, sleep, stimulation, activity)

In looking at the above list, that it is to be viewed as a pyramid, where the physiological needs are the base and most important need to be met. Nothing else above this level can function properly until your physiological needs are met.

Then we move up the pyramid through the levels. Self esteem is level 4, so if you have been asking yourself how to build self esteem, you have to see if your other needs have been met first.

For the most part, you are in control and you have the ability and you also have the responsibility to direct your life. You need to discover your values then begin living your life according to those values.

But before you can reach the top level of self actualization, the other needs must be met. And that includes self esteem.. I don’t think people really understand the need for healthy esteem in the achievement of their goals.

Now I am not talking the mushy feel good, super ego, self esteem trap that self help gurus have been dishing out lately. I am talking about a healthy value of yourself as a person. A person that contributes many things for many people, including yourself.

So if you are serious about, building self esteem, then take a look at your other needs and make sure that they are being met.

Build your esteem from the ground up and you will have build a strong foundation that will last a lifetime.

An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied. ~Arnold Glasow

In order to acheive self actualization, to be all that you are capable of being, your self esteem will need to be healthy, but also your esteem will help you gain knowledge, order, and understanding.

Decide today--to work. Work at doing your best, being your best, and accepting the best! When you do this, the question -- how to build self esteem, will be answered!
